Health Ministry of Christ Church seeks to engage the congregation in promoting and attaining the optimal state of physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health and well-being for all who are connected to the church community. It is composed of volunteer members of the church who work together to develop and implement the health ministry program. The Health Ministry Team encourages congregational and community involvement - utilizing and sharing resources that promote interdependence among God's people, along with the practice of good stewardship of body, mind, and spirit. Members can be identified with gold nametags on Sunday mornings. Health Ministry meets the third Sunday of the month at 12:30 pm to plan Health Ministry programs.

The Parish Nurse is a member of the pastoral care staff of Christ Church and assists in ministering to the hospitalized and shut-in members, along with supporting all members in fulfilling their physical, emotional, and spiritual health potential.

Celebrating the 90's

Have you ever thought about what it might be like to have lived 90+ years and to still be going strong?

Health Ministry and Christ Church recently set out to find the answer to that very question.

Standing in awe at the energy, commitment, resiliency, and faith of many of our 90+ year old members, we decided to try to identify how many members were in their 90’s and to honor them with a luncheon.

Forty-four nonagenarian’s (someone between the age of 90-99) were identified between Christ Church Harbor Apartments and Christ Church, and invited to our “Celebrating the 90’s Luncheon” on April 3rd. Twenty attended along with several guests and family members. We also celebrated those members who were not able to attend the function.

The group was asked to share their secrets to successful aging and any words of wisdom they cared to reveal. Their advice and comments revolved around the following: “Faith in God and prayer everyday”; “be healthy and happy and do unto others as you would have them do unto you”; “be there when I was needed”; “work hard, play hard and have lots of friends”; “stay active and keep in touch with what is going on in the world”; “sing, dance, and get up each morning with a purpose”; “be kind, keep going, trust in the Lord” “be ready to accept and learn from your challenge.”

An ongoing power point presentation of pictures of early Baltimore and Maryland people and places familiar to them from their youth was available to them as background music from their era filled the room.

They had fun guessing who belonged with which childhood picture in the “Guess the Picture” contest. Prizes were awarded for the oldest (there were two 98 year old members) and who came the longest distance to attend (one came from the National Lutheran Home in Rockville, MD). Pictures were taken and memories shared as old acquaintances were renewed.

The guests of honor were treated to a delicious luncheon prepared and served by Connie Crabtree and her Culinary Arts Class. Musical entertainment was shared as they all sang and swayed along with old favorites. The musical segment culminated with the group spontaneously standing as they sang “God Bless America.”

As life expectancy in our country continues to increase 2½ years every decade, perhaps many of us will someday be privileged to experience what it might be like to live into our 90’s or beyond. In the meantime, we pay tribute to those who go before us: our mentors, teachers, and friends; our link to days gone by; true gifts to treasure and honor.

NEW HEALTH MINISTRY PROGRAM!
MAY FITNESS CHALLENGE
  • Now that the weather is warmer have you been thinking about getting outside and becoming more active?
  • Does your exercise program need a spring cleaning?
  • Would you like to reach out to people less fortunate who need clean water in their community?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, please consider Health Ministry’s MAY FITNESS CHALLENGE.

On May 4, our  Kick-Off  date, stop by the Wishing Well display in the coffee hour room and  pick up Sponsor Sheets and Activity  Calendars and join our challenge.  Ask family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc. to sponsor you to raise money for clean water.  The fitness challenge piece can involve any activity you choose: walking, running, swimming, tennis, softball or any other activity you enjoy.  Ask the sponsors to contribute for each hour of exercise you complete between May 4 and May 31.

Our GOAL is to raise enough money to help fund a clean water project in Ethiopia. We would like to donate this money in thanksgiving for the ministry of Amsalu Geleta. Pastor Geleta, a native of Ethiopia, was a seminary intern here at Christ Church from September 2005 to May 2006.

There will be a “Race For Faith” kids program on Saturday, May 17 here at the church to allow our Sunday School and Nursery School to participate in helping to raise money for this cause and have fun with fitness activities as well.

Watch for more information in church bulletins and at the coffee hour room display.

Start planning which activity can give new life to your exercise routine (or begin anew) and join our Fitness Challenge for Clean Water. This is a healthy and fun way to help people enjoy the benefits of clean water.

The Labyrinth - A Safe Path in a Confused World
The courtyard between the church and parking garage displays a beautiful labyrinth - a tool for prayer and spiritual growth. The journey of walking the labyrinth is an opportunity to step out of normal time and space that frames our lives and enter a place apart. There are no rules; no right or wrong way to experience the labyrinth. It is a personal experience open and available to all. For more information on our labyrinth see any member of Health Ministry or the Parish Nurse.

Prayer Starter from Katherine Harms: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." ~ Matthew 5:8

My heart is seriously impure, Lord. You know it very well. I want to lay aside the things that blemish my heart. I cry for the cleansing that can only come through Jesus’ blood. I want to see you. I need to see you. Purify me and prepare me to stand before your throne. Every day of my life may I carry with me a clearer vision of you. AMEN.
