2012 NATIONAL YOUTH GATHERING UPDATE

As we prepare to go to New Orleans in July of 2012, I want to remind you of why we are going, what we will be doing there, and who is leading us there. Three core practices are guiding this gathering: Discipleship, Peacemaking, and Justice. I invite you to support our youth and advisers as they prepare to make this journey in faith. Attend our fundraisers, ask questions about how preparations are progressing, or simply ask a youth how their life is going and listen to them!

Discipleship is not an "activity" that we "do." It is a life that we lead. Ultimately, it is about following Jesus. You began to practice discipleship the moment you received God’s baptismal promises. At the ELCA Youth Gathering, we will have the opportunity during one of our days together to practice being a disciple of Jesus Christ, and to learn to take your relationship with Jesus to a deeper level. Following Jesus is a way of life. When these practices become part of our daily life, we are better equipped to live the life to which Christ has called us.

Practice Peacemaking will help young people become more conscious of their own call through focusing on how they can strive for justice and peace within themselves, their communities and the world. Practice Peacemaking will turn the New Orleans Ernest M. Morial Convention Center into a space for Interactive Learning. In this space, participants will engage in multi-sensory opportunities that will invite them to reflect on God’s value for everyone, particularly those who are marginalized by society; discern how they can participate in the church’s efforts to express this love and actually practice peacemaking.

The Practice Justice Day of the 2012 ELCA Youth Gathering is a witness to Jesus’ invitation to hit the streets, to follow one’s convictions with actions, and to do God’s work with our hands. Many have asked that if we are doing God’s work with our hands does that mean everyone will get dirty at the Gathering? Yes, it does. On the Practice Justice Day, the clean and predictable lives of many of us will get messed up a bit by learning about the ongoing struggles in New Orleans. Now, six years after Katrina, New Orleans still needs our attention.
